Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about giving to West Penn Hospital.
How Does the Foundation Raise the Funds Needed to Support the Hospital?
The Foundation raises funds through:
- Capital Campaigns - Special campaigns to build or renovate facilities and purchase equipment.
- Annual Fund - Annual gifts are solicited to fund a variety of needs, such as the Patient Care Fund. Gifts may be restricted to specific clinical areas or may be given unrestricted to assist in areas where the need is greatest.
- Commemorative Gifts - Donors may bestow a gift to honor or remember someone special or to mark an important occasion. The Foundation sends gift cards to the individual or groups being honored to inform them of the gift.
- Special Events - Special events generate opportunities for support from corporate sponsorships, as well as contributions of service and products.
- Major and Planned Gifts - Major gifts offer naming opportunities to donors with an interest in specific projects. Planned giving options include bequests in a will, life insurance policies, charitable trusts, annuities, or other deferred giving instruments.
- Sponsorship and Grants - The Foundation applies for grants from government agencies and private foundations. Pharmaceutical companies are approached to sponsor research studies appropriate to their interests.
How May My Gifts Be Designated?
You may designate your gifts in the following ways:
- Unrestricted - where the need is greatest.
- Capital gifts to build or renovate facilities.
- Patient Care Fund - provides funds for food, transportation, lodging, clothing, and other patient or family caregiver needs.
- Summer Camp for Burned Children - provides funds for burned children to attend summer camp, sponsored by the Foundation.
- Women's Health - supports women's health initiatives, including breast cancer prevention and treatment, and geriatric health.
- Medical Research - funding for cutting-edge medical research projects taking place at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital.
- Centers of Excellence - support for The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's clinical centers, including The Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute; The Western Pennsylvania Cardiovascular Institute; Institute for Computer Assisted Orthopedics / Joint Care Center.
- Women's, Infants' and Children's Health Services; the West Penn Burn Center; and the Joslin Center for Diabetes at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital.
- Medical Education - support for the Hospital's teaching programs.
- School of Nursing Scholarship Fund.
- Community-Based Programs - support for The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's community-based programs such as The Western Pennsylvania Hospital - Senior Health Services program, which helps secure a healthy future for our aging community.
Who Supports the Foundation?
Patients, family members, employees, physicians, and the community at large support The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's work through their generous contributions to programs and campaign efforts.
Grants from local and national foundations, as well as from the state and federal government, also support The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's programs, capital needs, and research.
How Are Donors Recognized?
Our donors are extremely important to us and we continuously seek ways to recognize them and express our gratitude.
- Any donor who contributes $100 or more in a given year will be published in The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Foundation Annual Report and featured on the annual donor recognition display.
- Current donors whose cumulative gifts total $1,000 or more will be featured on the permanent donor recognition wall located on the second floor main walkway of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital.
- Donors receive invitations to appreciation events.
- Donors are recognized and receive benefits based on their giving level:

How Do I Give?
A gift to promote health is one of the most enduring gifts you can give. When you give through The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Foundation, you join thousands of others who know how good it feels to contribute to the health of our community. Gifts can be made by personal check, money order, or credit card. Employees of The Western Pennsylvania Healthcare System, Inc., may use payroll deduction. The Foundation also arranges other means of making a contribution, such as the transfer of stock, wills and bequests, and pledges.
