APPRISE

APPRISE is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for Pennsylvania's Medicare beneficiaries. The PA Department of Aging created APPRISE to help citizens with Medicare understand their health insurance options so they can make informed decisions about which plan is best for them. The Allegheny County APPRISE program is operated by Family Services of Western PA. Callers can speak confidentially with a trained counselor Monday - Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm. We are able to help many people over the phone; in-person counseling is also available at one of our convenient satellite locations or in a client's home.

CLP provides health information for all ages. We also provide access to GED resources and instruction, literacy programs and tutors for children and adults. CLP provides after-school programs for children every month, and many CLP branches provide adults with consumer health lectures, computer training, help with job searches and other programming.

The Center for Minority Health (CMH) believes that the successful elimination of health disparitie depend upon our ability to establish trusting community partnerships. CMH coordinates the academic research and service activities of members of the faculty and students interested in partnering with CMH to address issues of relevance to minority health.  CMH has taken their public health campaign to city neighborhoods by launching the Healthy Black Family Project, which is an intervention designed to prevent diabetes and hyptertension in a designated Health Empowerment Zone.

East End Cooperative Ministry, Inc.

Our mission is to improve the economic and social conditions of the residents of Eastside neighborhoods by providing quality services in the areas of job readiness, counseling, career development and job placement.

Thanks to generous support from the City of
Pittsburgh-Pittsburgh Partnership, United Way of Allegheny County, and the Alcoa Foundation we are able to provide services to job-seekers and employers at no charge. In addition to serving adults, YouthLINK, a program of the Pittsburgh Partnership, allows us to provide targeted services to youth ages 14-21.

Lower Bloomfield Unity Council

The Lower Bloomfield Unity Council (LBUC) is a community-based, nonprofit organization and community development organization in lower Bloomfield.

By December 2007, LBUC will complete, for sale, construction of five ADA-accessible, upper-scale, two-story, three-bedroom townhomes with roof-top decks and underground parking. The group will also renovate an sell three-single family homes with off-stree parking in 2008 and will launch a real-estate website featuring homes in lower Bloomfield.

LBUC also provides advocacy services, cultural programs, a community newsletter and the only public library and radio station in Bloomfield.

Project to End Human Trafficking

The Project to End Human Trafficking is a non-profit organization that promotes human rights and mental health, in particular the rights and wellness of women and children.
