Timeline for Magnet Recognition at West Penn
The timeline for a healthcare institution to achieve Magnet Recognition from the ANCC has four phases. They are as follows, with the date that West Penn Hospital (WPH) completed each phase indicated:
Assessment and application: WPH 12/03
Document completion and review: WPH 12/05
Facility on-site survey: WPH 5/31 through 6/2/06
Review/decision: WPH was awarded Magnet recognition status on December 7, 2006
First Phase (Application Phase)
In this phase, the application form was completed by The Western Pennsylvania Hospital and submitted to the ANCC and the Hospital was approved to proceed to the second phase.
Second Phase (Submission of Written Documentation and Evaluation Phase)
In the second phase, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital's Nursing Division team produced a 5-volume set of documentation, as outlined in the ANCC's Magnet Recognition Program® instruction and application manual, demonstrating the innovative, dynamic, excellence-focused features of West Penn Hospital that are reflective of the forces of magnetism. West Penn Hospital's documentation also demonstrates how the Hospital implements the Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators within our structure, leadership, and management philosophy and how the standards are incorporated by the Nursing Division.
West Penn's documentation was received by the ANCC in December 2005 and reviewed by the Magnet Recognition Program appraisers assigned to West Penn. Based on the Hospital's size, West Penn was assigned three Magnet appraisers, who are professional registered nurses from the ANCC with experience in quality indicators, nursing services administration, and excellence in nursing.
Third Phase (Site Visit)
In April 2006 The Western Pennsylvania Hospital was notified that the Magnet appraisers assigned to West Penn had determined that the Hospital's Magnet documents "scored within the range of excellence", and a site visit was scheduled and took place on May 31, June 1, and June 2, 2006.
The purpose of the site visit was to for West Penn's Nursing Division to verify, clarify, and amplify the content of the written documentation and for the Magnet appraisers to evaluate the organizational milieu in which nursing is practiced at West Penn.
The site visit process also involved opening the written documentation for comment and review by community and public "references", with West Penn Hospital being allowed to submit the names of references for this process.
Fourth Phase (Internal Operations at the Magnet Program Office)
In the fourth phase, after the site visit Magnet appraisers submitted a detailed report and recommendations to the ANCC. Then the ANCC Commission on Magnet Recognition reviewed the findings and determined if Magnet recognition status would be awarded to West Penn Hospital.
West Penn Hospital was notified December 7, 2006, that we achieved the coveted Magnet recognition status!
Designation as a Magnet facility is an overall commendation, not only for the nursing staff but for the staff of the entire organization, and "a real cause for celebration". West Penn Hospital is enjoying the benefits of Magnet recognition status and busy continuously improving those qualities and programs that earned us Magnet designation.
