The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh is a 500-bed academic medical center that has been regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in nursing, bariatric surgery, bone marrow and cell transplantation, burn care, cardiovascular care, joint care, and reproductive medicine.

West Penn Hospital is the first hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to be awarded Magnet recognition status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2006. This prestigious 4-year designation recognizes excellence in nursing.

Our History

Since its founding in 1848 as Pittsburgh's first charted public hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has earned an international reputation for excellence and innovation in the care of patients, medical education and research. Today, this academic medical center has two hospital campuses that serve Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area:  The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus in Monroeville.

Our Clinical Services

As one of the largest tertiary facilities in the region, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital offers acute care for all medical-surgical conditions and advanced comprehensive care in a wide range of specialty areas, including the following:

West Penn Hospital's obstetrics program is one of the busiest in the region and its neonatal intensive care unit is one of the region's largest referral resources for sick newborns.  West Penn Hospital also is home to the patient offices for the Jones Institute at West Penn Allegheny Health System, an affiliate of the renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine of the Eastern Virginia Medical School.

The Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute provides the most advanced diagnostic and treatment services for all types of cancer, including lung, esophageal, breast, gynecologic, prostate, colorectal and blood-borne cancers. The Cancer Institute has earned national recognition for its bone marrow transplant program, one of the largest in Pennsylvania. The Institute also boasts leading-edge radiation oncology services and was the second cancer center in the world to offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. Patients have access to the latest treatment protocols through the Cancer Institute's participation in national research groups such as the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.

Our Professional Education Programs

Part of West Penn Allegheny Health System, West Penn Hospital is a leader in the education of healthcare professionals.

Students of Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) have the options of rotating or of studying for their entire third and fourth years at the TUSM Clinical Campus at West Penn.


The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing offers a 22-month program for the diploma in nursing and a concurrent program for eligible students to receive the associate of science in allied health degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.


The Hospital also sponsors a School of Respiratory Care in conjunction with Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a School of Radiologic Technology with the New Kensington campus of Penn State University.
