Poinsettias for Patients Program

Please help us make our patients’ stay during the holiday season just a little brighter. For a donation of $35, a poinsettia or potted or silk plant will be delivered to patients admitted to The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus during the month of December. Caring volunteers will present patients with a poinsettia or an appropriate alternative. Your donation can be made in living honor or memory of a loved one. The difference you make will last the whole year through. Added Benefit: Donors giving $35 or more will receive a Donor Appreciation Card with discounts at area businesses and restaurants.

Community of Care Awards

Forbes Health Foundation welcomes nominations for the Community of Care Awards that will be awarded at the 2009 Harmony Ball at the Marriott City Center on May 15th. Simply fill out the short nomination form below and send it back to the Foundation by January 30, 2009.

Ed Dardanell Legacy Award

Criteria:

1. Nominee has demonstrated a long-term dedication (preferably 20 or more years) to the mission of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus or Forbes Hospice.

2. Nominee may include a donor, community member, present or former physician, volunteer, or employee.

Past Awardees:

2007 – Marie Langan, VP of Administration 1946 (Pgh. Hospital) -1999

2008 – Steven N. Sotos, M.D.

Distinguished Service Award

Criteria:

1. Nominee has demonstrated an outstanding volunteer, community, physician or staff commitment to the mission of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus or Forbes Hospice.

Past Awardees:

2007 – The Honorable Sean Logan

2008 – Forbes Auxiliary

Corporate Partner of the Year Award

Criteria:

1. Nominee must be a business entity or organization that has demonstrated outstanding dedication to advancing the mission of quality patient care to the eastern suburbs through support of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus or Forbes Hospice.

The Highmark Foundation Grants $262,500 for

Redefining Chronic CARE Program

The Highmark Foundation has awarded a $262,500 grant to the Forbes Health Foundation to support a new program that uses manufacturing-based quality principles to dramatically change the way heart patients are cared for at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus. The new program, called Redefining Chronic CARE, is a three-year concentrated effort that is changing the organizational culture by adopting Toyota production system concepts. St. Vincent College’s Kennametal Center for Operational Excellence is teaching, training and demonstrating the concepts.

$10.4 Million Raised for New

Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular Center

Ed Dardanell is flanked by Hospital and Foundation officials at the recent opening of the Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular Center. Mr. Dardanell donated $1 million to launch the capital campaign for the Center that raised $10+ million for the project.

Forbes Leads Pennsylvania in Heart Failure Treatment

In a recent Federal study of heart failure death rates, Forbes scored as the only hospital in Pennsylvania to have better-than-average results when compared to 4,453 hospitals nationwide. Only 38 hospitals nationwide were included in this elite group. The Hospital treats more than 700 patients with heart failure each year, and its aggressive and timely management of the condition contributed to its better-than-average score. Treatment measures include providing smoking cessation counseling to patients, performing tests that show how the heart is pumping, and prescribing appropriate medications that are beneficial to patients with decreased function in the left side of the heart.
