The Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular Center debuted with a new program called Redefining Chronic CARE.  The goal of this program is to redefine health care with the desired outcomes of optimal patient safety, reduced repeat and prolonged care, optimal recovery time to get back to productivity, patient satisfaction and prolonged life.  The Highmark Foundation recently awarded the Foundation a $262,500 grant for this program that creates and empowers a culture of patient-focused problem solvers by developing a process-oriented environment of proactive, not reactive, care.  This program is under the direction of Dr. Michael H. Culig.

West Penn Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus . . .

v  Is the only full service hospital in the area serving 350,000 residents of eastern Allegheny and western Westmoreland Counties with a comprehensive range of quality healthcare services from birth to end of life hospice care. Residents have their specialized healthcare needs met in their own back yard in one centralized campus.  They need not travel into the city or across multiple locations.  Their patient record, history, and test results are centralized in one electronic system and available across the Hospital.

v  Is the only hospital within a 15 mile radius providing life saving heart services at the new Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular Center and family focused services at the new Women's and Infants' Care Center.

v  Is Monroeville’s largest employer, providing support to more than 1,400 employee households.

v  Answers the call for extensive Emergency Room care, treating 41,000 patients in the ER annually - comparable to Allegheny General Hospital, a facility twice the size of Forbes.  The Forbes ER has never turned a patient away due to an inability to pay.

v  Provides care to 14,000 inpatients and 165,000 outpatients annually.

v  Contributes to the economy of the region by drawing patients and family members to the community who then remain in the area to shop, dine, bank, and for entertainment and other services.

v  Continues to meet the increasing demands of people living in a challenged economy.  Forbes provided $14.5 million in uncompensated care to the community in fiscal year 2008, up 33% from the year before.

v  Is specifically dedicated to and is the largest provider of health care to the underserved in the area by way of its Forbes Family Health Center.  Forty percent of the Center’s patients are below the poverty level. The Center has never denied care to anyone nor has it ever denied immunization shots to children whether or not their parents had the ability to pay.
