The American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) have jointly released new evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of implantable electronic cardiac devices. the new recommendations address the management of implanted cardiac devices, the selection of cardiac device recipients, the management of different elements of patients’ care, safety recall issues, and ethical dilemmas such as when it may be appropriate to turn off a device. The recommendations are also the “first document to comprehensively address device-based therapy indications for life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and conditions including heart failure, congenital heart disease, and sudden cardiac arrest,” according to the authors.
